Like a child inherits traits from their parents, a WordPress child theme inherits the core functions of a parent theme, but allows you to make some modifications, such as to the theme’s appearance. Since the child theme and parent theme are contained in separate files, a child theme allows you to apply upgrades and customizations to a parent theme in a separate place while preserving the current state of the parent theme. This is helpful for creating and testing new changes to your theme without affecting your existing website functionality.
