Fun Had and Lessons Learned at Pixelwood Derby 2016

Occasionally, when we are not busily developing websites and juggling keywords, we do some fun company events.

This May, we participated in the annual Pixelwood Derby hosted by SiteGoals, which brings together digital marketing and creative agencies from around Austin to compete in a good old-fashioned derby race.

Part of this experience included building our first-ever derby car, and we knew many of our local talented agency friends would have creative themes. We held a vote among our team for a theme concept, and in the end, we landed on a design theme from the Q*bert video game.

Finally, on May 26th, we achieved a qualifying car within the weight and measurement requirements. What’s more, it never fell off the race track and it all stayed in 1 piece!

We aren’t exactly carpenters, but we put in our best effort and learned some lessons along the way. For example, we learned that Austin agencies are very dedicated to designing their cars. Some of them spend weeks or even months tooling and painting and testing out presentations. We also learned that when creative agencies get together and form a competitive team, they sometimes dress up in funny wigs and costumes. Also, graphite is a handy speed enhancer, so we should really bring that next time. And, apparently, some people who were born after 1979 don’t know what Q*bert is.

The Pixelwood Derby event, sponsored by many local companies and attended by hundreds of local talented folks, raised money for Safe Place. We were proud to participate and look forward to next year.
